Job Description

The Metallurgical and Materials Process External Field Control Team of Northeastern University plans to recruit 2 to 3 full-time postdoctoral researchers each year in related fields such as Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and New Energy Science and Engineering.

Position and Requirements

Candidates with a background in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, New Energy Science and Engineering, or related fields are preferred, especially those who can integrate their doctoral research areas with the research directions of the research group.

2. Possess strong English reading, writing and conversational skills, having published first-author articles in high-level international journals, and also have good writing skills for Chinese scientific and technological materials.

3. Possessing good moral character, being diligent and hardworking, having a strong sense of responsibility and a good team spirit, as well as certain organizational, coordination and management abilities.

4. Applicants should be no more than 35 years old, about to obtain a doctoral degree or having obtained a doctoral degree within no more than 3 years.

Introduction to the Research Group

Academic leader

Wang Qiang, a Doctor of Engineering from Nagoya University in Japan, is a Second-Class Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Northeastern University. He also serves as the President of the Institute of Science and Technology of Northeastern University and the Director of the Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Processing of Materials (EPM) of the Ministry of Education. He is a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a member of the National Program for Talents in the "Thousand, Ten Thousand and HunPostdoced" Project, and one of the first batch of mid-aged and young leading scientific and technological innovators under the "Ten Thousand Talents Program". In addition, he is a member of the Academic Committee of Northeastern University, a standing director of the Chinese Society for Nonferrous Metals, an editorial board member of Acta Metallurgica Sinica, and an editorial board member of Journal of Shandong University (Engineering Science Edition), among others.

3. Publication and Award Records

More than 300 SCI-indexed papers have been published in journals such as Small, Advanced Materials, Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, and Applied Physics Letters. Five review and commentary articles were invited by IJIS International, Chinese Physics B, Acta Metallurgica Sinica, and Acta Physica Sinica. Six patents have been granted in the United States, Japan, Europe, and South Korea, and two international PCT patent applications have been filed. Over 60 Chinese patent applications have been filed (with over 30 granted). Three monographs, Strong Magnetic Field Materials Science, New Electromagnetic Metallurgy Technology, and Computational Metallurgy, were published by Science Press (all funded by the Science Publishing Fund of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), and one textbook, Energy Conversion Materials and Technology, was also published. Two English monographs, Modeling, Characterization and Production of Nanomaterials and Intermetallic Matrix Composites, were co-authored at the invitation of Woodhead Publishing in the UK and Elsevier in the Netherlands. One first prize in Natural Science from the Ministry of Education and two second prizes in Natural Science from Liaoning Province were awarded.

4. Project Undertaking Situation

He has undertaken over 60 projects including 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 major project, 1 key project, 5 general projects, 1 international cooperation project, and 9 youth projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 National Major Science and Technology Project, 1 973 Project, provincial and ministerial projects, and horizontal cooperation and transformation projects with enterprises. His research team has been funded by the "National Innovation Research Group Cultivation Project" of the Central University Basic Research Business Fee, and has been selected into the Innovation Team Support Plan of Liaoning Province Higher Education Institutions, the Innovation Team of the "XingLiao Talent Program" of Liaoning Province, and the first "Disciplinary Cross-Innovation Team" of Northeastern University.

5. Equipment and Research Conditions

The research group is equipped with a complete set of platforms and instruments for material preparation under strong magnetic fields, electromagnetic metallurgy technology research and development and testing, material microstructure and physical property analysis and detection, numerical simulation and modeling software and servers, battery electrochemistry, etc. These include: superconducting strong magnetic field devices, self-developed devices for directional solidification, induction heating, heat treatment, high-temperature liquid metal wettability analysis, high-temperature liquid metal electrical conductivity testing, molecular beam epitaxy, chemical reactions, etc. under strong magnetic fields, magnetron sputtering, high-energy ball milling devices, various heat treatment and melting furnaces. Various electromagnetic induction coils and their power supplies, multiple sets of electromagnetic fluid dynamics application effect testing and physical simulation systems in metallurgical processes, ladle and mold water model simulation systems in continuous casting processes, electromagnetic field measurement systems, Doppler ultrasonic velocity measurement systems, high-speed camera systems, etc. PPMS, VSM, multi-channel electrochemical workstations, atomic force microscopes, thermoelectric testers, Hall effect testers, optical microscopes, battery testing systems, surface property testing instruments, high-precision thermal imagers, wire cutting machines, metallographic preparation equipment, glove boxes, etc. The usage rights of commercial software such as LAMMPS, VASP, Materials Studio, Ansys, Thermocalc, and high-performance servers.

Research directions of the research group

Interdisciplinary research on metallurgical and materials process control under external fields: Electromagnetic fluid dynamics theory and electromagnetic metallurgy technology, liquid forming and control of materials under strong magnetic fields, external field regulation of interfaces and surfaces in metallurgical and materials processes, etc.

2. Research on the development and application technologies of energy conversion materials: development of thermoelectric energy conversion, electroluminescent energy conversion materials and devices, magneto-mechanical energy conversion, battery electrochemical energy conversion materials and devices, etc.

3. Numerical simulation and modeling of metallurgical and material preparation processes: Electromagnetic metallurgical process simulation based on computational fluid dynamics (Ansys, Fluids, etc.) and low-dimensional material process simulation based on computational materials science (first principles, molecular dynamics, etc.).

Treatments and Benefits

Postdoctoral researchers in national special projects receive an annual salary of 400,000 to 450,000 yuan; those from overseas high-level institutions receive 400,000 yuan; young teacher postdoctoral researchers receive 200,000 to 300,000 yuan; and those within the plan receive 170,000 to 270,000 yuan. Postdoctoral researchers enjoy the same benefits as faculty members. Those who obtain a doctoral degree from a university ranked within the top 200 in the world and remain in Liaoning Province for more than five years after completing their postdoctoral research and sign a formal employment contract will receive a one-time living subsidy of 300,000 yuan per person from the provincial government. Those who receive the "Postdoctoral Innovation Talent Support Program" will be treated in accordance with the benefits of overseas high-level postdoctoral researchers. They also enjoy additional research funds, living subsidies or performance rewards provided by Liaoning Province, Shenyang City and Northeastern University.

The research group provides guidance for the professional development of postdoctoral researchers: supporting and guiding applications for the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Young Scholars, the National Postdoctoral Science Foundation, the Northeastern University "Young Teachers' Research Start-up Fund" (80,000 to 120,000 yuan), the Northeastern University Postdoctoral Fund (30,000 to 50,000 yuan), and the "Postdoctoral Innovation Talent Support Program" and other postdoctoral talent programs.

3. The research group will cover all research expenses for the postdoctoral fellow during his/her stay at the station.

4. The university pays the "five insurances and one fund" for postdoctoral researchers in accordance with the standards for in-house staff at the same level and provides them with low-rent postdoctoral apartments. The chilPostdocen of postdoctoral researchers enjoy the same policies for admission to kindergartens and schools as the chilPostdocen of university staff.

Postdoctoral Exit and Conversion to Regular Employment

The general duration of a postdoctoral position is two years.

For postdoctoral researchers who meet the exit standards and have outstanding performance, priority will be given to recommending them for appointment to full-time teaching positions at the associate professor level or above in the university.
