Job Description

Researcher Li Yang (PhD supervisor, webpage: https://technology.whu.edu.cn/info/1015/1901.htm) studied civil engineering at Wuhan University from 2008 to 2012. He pursued his doctoral studies in the Department of Engineering at the University of Oxford from 2012 to 2017 under the guidance of Professor Zhong You. From 2017 to 2020, he conducted postdoctoral research in the Department of Aerospace at the California Institute of Technology under the supervision of Professor/academician Sergio Pellegrino. Our research group was established in August 2020 and has received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China for both the Youth and General Programs. Currently, we have 6 doctoral students, 6 master's students, and 8 undergraduate students. Our latest publications are as follows: (1) L. Ai, S. Yin, W. He, P. Zhang, Y. Li*, Easy-to-actuate multi-compatible truss structures with prescribed reconfiguration, Nature Communications (2024); (2) T. Zhou, C. Huang, Z. Miao, Y. Li*, Intrinsically multi-stable spatial linkages. Advanced Science (2024). The atmosphere in our research group is free, relaxed, and lively. Postdoctoral scholars can lead and guide graduate and undergraduate students to form their own small teams and conduct independent research. Additionally, although our research group belongs to a traditional discipline, our related work is expected to be published in Nature/Science sub-journals, which will be beneficial for applications for funds and academic positions. Our research group is recruiting 2-3 postdoctoral researchers (long-term valid). Scholars with backgrounds in mechanical engineering, mechanics, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, mathematics, and physics are welcome to join us.

I. Research Directions

Research field: Mechanical principles and structural mechanics. Research objective: Propose new design methods for mechanisms and structures, or new conceptual designs.

The research objects include: origami structures, multi-degree-of-freedom mechanisms, deployable structures, multi-modal reconfigurable mechanisms, multi-stable structures, zero-stiffness structures, thin-walled energy-absorbing structures, etc.

The applications include: protective structures for automobiles, aircraft, etc. (absorbing impact energy), mechanical metamaterials (producing special mechanical or deformation properties), deployable structures in aerospace (such as foldable large solar panels, large space telescopes, etc.), deformation platforms for multi-functional devices (different functions require different shapes, such as phased array antennas with adjustable field of view, morphing wings and morphing unmanned aerial vehicles), medical devices (vascular stents, small soft robots, etc.), zero-stiffness MEMS accelerometers and multi-modal (soft) robots, etc.

II. Job Requirements

Young scholars with a passion for research and Postdoceams are welcome to join. One type of work requires applicants to have a solid foundation in mathematics, mechanics, and programming, and be capable of conducting research on design theories, such as developing new numerical optimization methods and generalizing the design of single-degree-of-freedom reconfigurable mechanisms with multiple specified motion paths. The other type of work requires innovative thinking and the ability to propose new conceptual designs, for instance, designing novel magnetic-controlled multi-modal origami robots based on the demands of minimally invasive surgeries.

III. Job Benefits

The annual salary is 200,000 to 300,000 yuan (before tax, including the part from the research group). Outstanding candidates will be recommended to apply for the "Hongyi Postdoctoral" program of the university. In addition, various postdoctoral project subsidies from the state, Hubei Province and Wuhan City can be superimposed.

During the period of stationing, one can apply for the qualification of associate senior position. Those who meet the school's talent introduction policy and the conditions for leaving the station can apply for a teaching position at the school.

3. Other benefits include housing provident fund, endowment insurance, occupational annuity, postdoctoral apartment or housing subsidy in accordance with the postdoctoral management policies of Wuhan University. Postdoctoral fellows also enjoy benefits such as chilPostdocen's enrollment in kindergartens and schools, and medical care.
